Dr. Geoffrey P. Dunn, MD, FACS, is a member of the Active Staff, Department of Surgery and Medical Director of the Palliative Care Consultation Service at UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA.
As a native of Erie, Pa. received his MD from the Thomas Jefferson Medical University and his surgical training with the Harvard Surgical Service, New England Deaconess Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Surgery and in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. His surgical experience included trauma, burns, pediatrics, and cancer in this country and in India where he was a visiting professor of surgery in 1988. He was Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa. before he began working full time in the field of palliative and hospice care as Medical Director of the Palliative Care Consultation Service and Great Lakes Hospice at Hamot. Since 1997 his work has focused on the education of surgeons nationally and internationally about the principles and practice of palliative care in the setting of serious and life-limiting illness.
Dr. Dunn edited The Surgeon and Palliative Care (W.B. Saunders, 2001) and co-edited Surgical Palliative Care (Oxford, 2004) with the late Alan G. Johnson, MChir, FRCS which have become references for surgeons interested in the field of palliative care. He was formerly Chairman of the Surgical Palliative Care Task Force of the American College of Surgeons and was the Editor for the monthly Palliative Care Series in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. He currently is Community Editor for the Pain and Palliative Care Community for the ACS’s web portal. From 2002 to 2008 he served on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and is the representative of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine to the ACS’s Commission on Cancer. Dr. Dunn was a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s exam writing committee for the first certification examination for the subspecialty of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
