The most downloaded articles published in Annals of Palliative Medicine in 2022
Each year, the Annals of Palliative Medicine (APM) editors review the most cited and most downloaded articles from the previous year (1).
Citations are a critical factor for academic journals in determining their impact factor. Yet downloads are a primary indicator of interest in a particular subject, which informs us of the topics in which our readership is most enthusiastic. As these two measures are highly correlated (2), in an emphasis on our readership and presenting readers with the articles of most interest to them, we are happy to detail the top 10 most downloaded articles published in APM from 2022.
While 3 of the top 10 articles downloaded from 2021 related to coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), with the World Health Organization declaring an end to the global emergency status for the COVID-19 pandemic in early May 2023, the top downloaded articles from 2022 shifted to many of the other topics reflective of the diverse focus of APM across multimodality therapy, biomarkers, imaging, biology, pathology, clinical care, and technical advances related to palliative medicine and palliative care (3).
The most downloaded article published in APM in 2022 is a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the benefits of physical therapy on recovery of motor function following stroke. The second through fifth most downloaded articles are as follows: (I) a narrative review and practice recommendations on the use of dexmedetomidine in palliative care; (II) a retrospective study on the use of esketamine on pain control and postpartum depression after cesarean section; (III) a review on palliative surgery and the role of surgeons in the palliative care team; and (IV) a scientometric analysis on chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome. The remainder of the top 10 most downloaded articles included a review on minimally-invasive pain management techniques, a randomized comparison of analgesic efficacy of periarticular infiltration and pericapsular nerve group block for total hip arthroplasty, a bibliometric analysis on obstructive sleep apnea, a survey on grief in pediatric critical care nurses, and a narrative review on the role of the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway in liver ischemia-reperfusion injury (Table 1).
